Dr. Kaliamoorthy, a representative of the Botanical Survey of India, provided a brief introduction, highlighting the institution’s role in conserving and showcasing diverse orchid species.
The National Orchidarium and Botanical Garden, under the management of the Botanical Survey of India, serves as a premier attraction in Yercaud. Renowned for its extensive collection of orchid species and other botanical wonders, the visit provided an enriching and visually captivating experience for the group.
Over a three-hour period, the students immersed themselves in the botanical wonders, gaining insights into the unique characteristics of various orchid species, including the rare lady’s slipper. Notably, an insectivorous plant, Nepenthes, commonly known as the ‘Pitcher plant,’ was cultivated from Meghalaya and showcased to the students. The observation of these pitcher plants trapping insects for their nitrogen supply was a highlight of the visit.
The tranquil ambiance of the Botanical Garden, coupled with the cool climate of Yercaud, contributed to the overall enjoyment of the experience. The visit to the National Orchidarium and Botanical Garden offered a harmonious blend of natural beauty and ecological education.
Expressing their profound gratitude, the students extended their appreciation to the Principal, Mrs. Vijayalakshmi, and Mrs. Linta for providing this invaluable opportunity.
